The Tour of Qinghai Lake, established by the Qinghai Provincial Government, is a premier road cycling race promoting local development and the sports industry. Over 23 years, it has become an international event, emphasizing Green, Civilization, Harmony, and Experience. Recognized as a major Chinese cycling event, it was first held in 2002 and features a challenging high-altitude course. By 2005, it was Asia's top cycling race and ranked among China's top 100 sports brands by 2010. The race spans multiple provinces, gaining global recognition, including a feature in Times Square in 2016.
In 2019, the Tour of Qinghai Lake returned to Qinghai after spanning three provinces and was upgraded to the UCI Pro Series, reducing stages from 13 to 8. The 2020 race was canceled due to COVID-19, replaced by the Tour of Qinghai Lake Carnival with 11 activities. In 2021 and 2022, domestic teams participated in the race. By 2023, it resumed as a UCI Pro Series event with 22 international teams competing.
