The London Marathon's Starting Line

It all started in 1979 when Chris Brasher, two-time Olympic athlete, gold medalist and journalist for the BBC and The Observer, returned to the UK after running the New York Marathon. He was inspired by the literal and metaphorical "human race" and wanted to bring the same joy, thrill and excitement to London. He partnered with fellow Olympic medalist John Disley, and in 1981 the London Marathon was born.

Happy 45 – A Celebration of All Things London

From amateurs to those in crazy costumes to some of the best athletes in the world, thousands will travel to England's capital to try to conquer the 42.195km course. In addition to the race, there will be a spectacular public celebration taking over central London—featuring a digital display of marathon memories from all 44 past editions.

One of the Greatest Sporting Events in the World

What started with over 7,000 runners in 1981 is now expected to have over 56,000 runners finish in 2025. And like a royal wedding, this royal "running" will have hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the streets, cheering and celebrating this amazing achievement.
